Bellamy’s staff queried
PA Wellington Two Bellamy’s staff members who were seen perching on the balcony outside the Prime Minister’s office on the ninth floor of the Beehive have prompted an investigation by Parliamentary officials.
Bellamy’s, the Parliamentary catering service which runs the bars and dining rooms in the Beehive, occupies large areas of the lower three floors of the building. It comes under the over-all responsibility of the Parliamentary Service which is in charge of administering Parliament Buildings. The incident occurred
some time after the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, saw the chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Richard Lugar, on Wednesday afternoon.
The acting general manager of the Parliamentary Service, Mr Jack Fenaughty, confirmed that the incident was being investigated. He declined to make any further comment, saying that as staff members were involved he should complete his inquiries first.
He would not say how the-staff members got on to Mr Lange’s balcony nor what they were doing
there, except that they were trying to get back into the building. Mr Lange was asked by reporters yesterday if he was surprised to see the two Bellamy’s staff on his balcony.
“It usually takes a lot longer to get Bellamy’s staff to appear,” he replied.
Brushing aside a question about a possible security breach, he said that was a matter for the Parliamentary Service. "I have never been at risk of anything except some of the food. Bellamy’s staff do not constitute a security risk to me,” said Mr Lange.
