Well-bred maidens on show at Ashburton
By
ALEX McMILLAN
Maiden events on the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s Cup meeting have become renowned over the years for exposing the talents of many potential topliners, and material on offer at tomorrow’s meeting should ensure that the tradition is continued. The Riccarton trainer, Dave Kerr, now training in partnership with his wife, Jan, has previously
used the first day of the meeting to embark brilliant three-year-olds such as Clansman and Canterbury Belle on colourful careers, and with Tidemark he could be successfully represented again. Tidemark, a three-year-old by Palm Beach out of Joyable, is a half-brother to a former smart Central Districts - galloper. Able Note. He races in the Nottingham Park Stud Maiden No. 2, in which
his rivals include Robinski, a three-year-old son
of Noble Bijou and the former classy race mare, Robanna. He is trained by Tom Lalor. Hokey Pokey (Beaufort Sea—Candy Town), a full sister to the former good handicapper, Charles Beaufort, appears likely to open her account. in the Nottingham Park Stud Maiden No. 1. The Peter and Dawn Williams trained three-year-old recorded a second on this, her home course, in June, and should go one better from a handy draw tomorrow. One of her most interesting rivals is Coral Princess (Beaufort Sea— Misadvice), a four-year-old full sister to the former top sprinter, Sea Princess, in Neil Coulbeck’s Leithfield stable.
Sea Craft, a three-year-old brother and stablemate of Coral Princess, contests the Nottingham Park Stud Maiden No. 3, a race in which he may well clash with another well-bred North Canter-bury-trained three-year-old in Gene (Claudio Nicolai—Joyalice), a representative of John Parsons’ Balcairn stable.
