Jean Rapier favoured at Gisborne tomorrow

Special correspondent Gisborne Jean Rapier is almost certain to take his place in the Ferguson Gold Cup Steeples, which will be the major attraction on the second day of the Poverty Bay Hunt Club’s meeting at Gisborne tomorrow. The winner of last week’s Pakuranga Hunt Cup, Jean Rapier is being considered for a tilt at two of America’s most prestigious jumping races in November. Trainer, Graeme Rogerson, has intimated that the nine-year-old gelding is likely to contest both the Mary-

land International on November 1 and then the Colonial Cup on November 16. Should he come through satisfactorily, Jean Rapier could then race in Europe. However, all that depends on him safely negotiating the reasonably easy country at Gisborne. But Jean Rapier has to give away as much as 7.5 kg to his rivals which include the first day winner, Sara Son, and runner-up, On Change. The latter is trained by Warren Robinson at Matangi and the stable has had remarkable success in the Ferguson over the years. Judging on his narrow defeat on the first

day of the meeting on Wednesday it is likely that On Change will be the one capable of making an issue of it with Jean Rapier.

The first day winner, Kotare Boy, won with remarkable ease on Wednesday and it wiil take more than his rehandicap to 57kg to stop the veteran making it a double for the meeting, in the Thos Fraser Memorial, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. A newcomer, The Overseer, has shown ability and in the absence of Eye Tango he could be the one for the second leg, the Ruie Hansen Memorial.
