Professor attacks Govt on science policies

PA Dunedin The Government’s userpays and science research policies were putting New Zealand oh a disaster course, said the president of the Institute of Chemistry, Professor George Petersen.

Addressing the institute’s annual conference Professor Petersen said science, which faced desperate problems, was essential to the long-term

wellbeing of the nation. “As long as the front row of the Treasury benches is occupied by Ministers who have no interest in science and who cannot be persuaded that science provides a key factor in long-term survival, we are doomed to slip,” he said.

Professor Petersen called for creation of the position of chief scientific adviser to the Govem-

ment — attached to the Prime Minister’s Department and independent of any other Ministry. A science policy committee was also needed to overview all research in the public sector.

The third change would be to give the Royal Society responsibility to collect and evaluate scientific advice for the Government.
