Duty calls for tiny board
PA Invercargill Ratepayers in the little Mid-Wakatipu Pest Destruction Board carry elector participation in local body politics to extremes. Only ratepayers may be elected to the board, and only ratepayers may nominate persons for positions. There are five seats on the board. There are only five electors in the whole dis-
trict, and not much chance for dodging. Each ratepayer must serve on the board—if he/she were not nominated and elected, there would be a vacancy to be filled by appointment, and the only person eligible to fill it would be him/herself. This had been the position for the 30 or so years of the board’s existence, said the returning officer, Mr W. J. Byers, yesterday.
The board’s district is large, covering the stations round Lake Wakatipu— Cecil Peak, Walter Peak, Hay Way Bay and Mount Nicholas. The Walter Peak resort developer is also a ratepayer, and would be able to nominate and elect a representative, Mr Byers said. For the record, four nominations had been received by yesterday.
