AUSTRALIA Firmer close

NZPA-AAP : Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer in thin turnover with the industrial sector’s response to a steadier dollar offsetting weaker gold issues. Brokers said the market was buoyed by Tuesday’s M 3 money supply figures, which showed a substantial reduction in credit growth and raised expectations of a fall in interest rates. On the industrials board the firmer dollar attracted support for leading transport, developer and banking stocks. TNT, which is trading ex-dividend 35c , closed 5c higher on 305 while Lend Lease rose 20 to 860 and 5c rises took Jennings to 185 and John Holland to 175. Among the banks, ANZ was up 5 to 480, Advance Bank climbed 3 to 260 and Westpac advanced 2 to 462, while the National fell 2 to 530 and the Bank of Singapore eased 5 to 155. Bond Corp moved up 11 to 333 for a two-day rise of 28c, Ariadne improved 7 to 342 and lEL, which will make a formal offer for Adelaide and Wallaroo Fertilizers at 160 a share, closed steady on 694. Elsewhere among the leaders, BHP slipped 2 to 780 in thin trading and Bell Resources eased 15 to 495, while Adsteam gained 30 to 1160 and Elders IXL added 2 to 500. Mining stocks also closed firmer on balance, despite a weaker gold sector in the wake of easing bullion prices, with Aberfoyle up 20 to 8.00 and MIM, advancing 5 to 180. CRA advanced 10 to 600 and its Comalco subsidiary closed steady on 240. Among the gold miners Kidston fell 10 to 710, Poseidon was 5 off at 288, Renison eased 4 to 746 and Placer Pacific eased 9 to 213.
