Strike-prone ports

Australia has the world’s most strike-prone ports, according to the London-based Transmarine Mutual Strikes Assurance Association. The association records that 67.25 days were lost at Australian ports last year because of strikes. This accounts for 21.54 cent of all the world stoppages recorded by Transmarine. The frequency of disputes at Australian ports badly disrupted New Zealand’s seaborne trade to the country. New Zealand, too, had a share of strikes at ports. Transmarine says that the strike record at New Zealand ports’ was the fifth worst in the world. Claims made to the association show that 31.38 days were lost at New Zealand ports as a result of strikes. This represents slightly more than 10 per cent of all time lost through strikes worldwide.
