Wizard and census

Sir,—Ron Wallace (August 23) singles me out by name as someone who "flouts the rule of law” and urges the Statistics Department to prosecute me for not filling in a census form. I am a wizard not a criminal; the only laws I “flout” are the laws of Nature. I vanished, at midnight on census night and was not therefore in New Zealand, and hence not required to complete a census form. Mr Wallace sounds like the sort of kill-joy who believes in statistics and enjoys filling in forms bqt but does not believe in magic or appreciate living works of art. The Canterbury rugby team and the Canterbury basketball team have signed the public petition, issued by the Canterbury Promotions Council, affirming their belief (in the absence of any evidence to the contrary) that I vanished on census night; so has Sir Michael Fowler, Canon Bob Lowe and Norman Jones, M.P. If our sporting heroes and most outspoken public figures believe I vanished, what chance have bureaucrats and pedants of persuading people that I did not?—Yours, etc.,

WIZARD OF CHRISTCHURCH. (Formerly lan Brackenbury Channell), August 24, 1986.
