Sir,—A. Higgins (August 23) seems to be disturbed by our reporting of facts about Operation Deep Freeze, but not by the facts themselves. Listening to our group or not is your correspondent’s choice in this democracy of ours. I would wager that A. Higgins knew nothing about United States Air Force support of Pine Gap until we reported it. A. Higgins may know nothing about how nuclear weapons are transported on trucks and trains through American cities without the knowledge of the residents. Secrecy prevails with nuclear weapons both in the United States and abroad. That is how they can be deployed with little or no public objection. Most New Zealanders support our nuclearfree policy. Surely they, and perhaps others, would like to know that military aircraft passing through our airport carry the same neither-confirm-nor-deny policy as United States warships. — Yours, etc., ROBERT L. LEONARD. August 24, 1986.
