Aquino, Suharto confer
NZPA-Reuter Jakarta
The Philippines President, Corazon Aquino, began talks yesterday with President Suharto, of Indonesia, which were expected to focus on ways of lifting South-East Asia out of a severe economic downturn.
Mrs Aquino arrived in Jakarta on Sunday to begin a four-day tour of Indonesia and Singapore,
her first trip abroad since assuming power after a civilian-backed military revolt in February.
Both leaders emphasised boosting economic growth and political stability through the sixmember Association of South-East Asian Nations (A.S.E.A.N.) in speeches at a State banquet. The grouping, which links Indonesia with the Philippines, Thailand,
Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei, will hold its first summit in 10 years in Manila next year, with their economies badly hit by slumping oil and commodity prices. Mrs Aquino brushed aside the possibility of a coup in her absence from the Philippines, saying in Manila that she was “leaving the country to good and trusted hands.”
