Sydney league leader upset
Canberra, languishing in equal last position, toppled the Sydney rugby league premiership leader, Parramatta, 19-12, at Seiffert Oval, Canberra, last Sunday. The upset enabled South Sydney to go to the head of the competition table by beating ManlyWarringah, 33-18. Souths have 46 points, Parramatta 35, and Manly 33. In the final premiership round next week-end Parramatta meets Manly, while Souths are opposed by Balmain.
The chances of Balmain qualifying for the top-five championship play-offs nose-dived last Saturday when it lost, 10-12, to
North Sydney, captained by Mark Graham, who won the “man of the match” award. Another New Zealander, Dean Beil, was a tryscorer in Eastern’s 22-20 defeat of Illawarra, while Penrith humbled Cron-ulla-Sutherland, 50-14. Western Suburbs had the bye and CanterburyBankstown and St George were to meet on Monday night Points (Canterbury and St George have a match in hand): Souths 36, Parramatta 35, Manly 33, Canterbury 31, Balmain 28, St George 28, Norths 28, Penrith 25, Cronulla 23, Easts 22, Wests 21, Canberra 20, Illawarra 18
