City rates
Sir, —There must be a drive to lower city council expenditure. It is to be eternally regret- 5 ted that the leadership of the Merivale residents, has taken the path it has. Ultimately, it has been the actions of their leadership, that have caused both the present divisions in the city, and on the council. The actions of the Christchurch Ratepayers’ Protection Committee, a suspected offshoot of the Merivale Precinct Society, also needs close examination. If one is genuine, one does not try and divert another area’s rates protest meeting. One supports it. What the leadership of these two organisations should have done, in the first place, was to approach each city area through the council’s Community Association system. We could possible have all worked together. You do not kick in the eye another part of town, and then invite it to a party. — Yours, etc.,
STEPHEN H. RICE. August 20, 1986.
