Restricted course to go ahead
PA Rotorua Waiariki Community College’s week-long introduction to nursing course, restricted to Maoris and Pacific Islanders, will go ahead in spite of charges of racism. “We have received about 40 complaints this year from people who think the course is biased and in breach of the Race Relations Act," said Mr Bill Brislen, head of the college’s school of health department. Twenty-five people will attend the course which is designed to attract more Maoris and Pacific Islanders to nursing.
