Call on sheep deaths

PA Wellington More than 12,000 sheep have died in live sheep exports this year, says the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Wellington S.P.C.A. director, Mr Ross McLauchlan, said the official figures totalled 11,451, but this did not take into account others which had died just before or after transit. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, was not available at the week-end and his press officers declined to comment. Mr McLauchlan said the 12,000 sheep were 3 per cent of . the total 408,000 sent overseas in the religious season just ended. The last ship arrived at Saudi Arabia on August 13. The society was calling for the trade to be stopped, not just in reaction to the deaths but because many more sheep must have suffered for so many to have died, he said.
