Linwood wins cup

Linwood capped its centennial year by winning "The Press” Centennial Cup for the best and fairest team in the senior rugby competition by a clear-cut margin of seven points from its nearest rival and previous multiple winner, Lincoln College.

The result was recognition for Linwood’s coach, lan Mallard, and the enterprising rugby played this winter by the predominantly youthful side. It just failed to register a

century of tries for the season.

The new senior champion, Shirley, one of three teams to score 19 points out of a maximum of 20 yesterday, finished in third place. Teams were assessed on the extent of their constructive play, their sportsmanship, and adherence to the rules. The week-end’s points allotment was: Shirley, sportsmanship 12, constructiveness 7, total 19; New Brighton, 12, 7, 19; Old Boys, 12, 7, 19; Burn-

side, 12, 6, 18; MerivalePapanui, 12, 6, 18; Christchurch, 12, 6, 18; University, 11, 7, 18; Belfast, 11, 7, 18; Linwood, 12, 5, 17; Albion, 10, 7, 17; Lincoln College, 11, 5, 16; Marist, 12, 4, 16; Suburbs, 12, 4, 16; Hornby, 10, 6, 16; Sydenham, 8,6, 14; Lyttelton, 8,5, 13.
