Midway Lady retired

NZPA-Reuter London

Midway Lady, winner of the Epsom Oaks and 1000 Guineas, has been retired after a recurrence of the leg trouble which has plagued her since her Oaks victory. Trainer, Ben Hanbury, who had planned to bring the filly back for the Prix Vermeille and Arc de

Triomphe, said: “The tendon sheath of her near foreleg is inflamed again and that means her career is over.”

Midway Lady was beaten only once in six races, at her racecourse debut at Yarmouth last August when finishing second to Untold.

She gained her revenge on Untold by winning the

Oaks in June and after that recorded an even more impressive victory in the 1000 Guineas. Midway Lady, which is by the dual Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged, has a bright future at stud but Mr Hanbury said he did not know what her American owners, Harry Rainier and Tom Martin, had planned.
