Sydenham chase double
Sydenham will also be defending the Desmond-Rogers Memorial Challenge Trophy when it plays in the Gore Cup rugby league final at the Addington Show Grounds on September 7. A 12-10 win over Kaiapoi in the semi-final at Addington Park yesterday gave Sydenham the opportunity to complete its season with two trophies. On Sunday Kaiapoi meets Marist-Western Suburbs, which beat Linwood, 14-8, at Centennial Park yesterday, to find Sydenham’s cup final opponent and trophy chal-
lenger. Marist led from the sixth minute, when Hal October scored his try, and was in front of Linwood by 14-6 at half-time. A penalty goal by Denis Davern for Linwood was the only second half addition.
Robert Schwass, at loose forward and later at hooker, Gary Leek and David Grant were the most impressive Marist players. Sydenham came from a 04 deficit at the interval to beat Kaiapoi. Particularly prominent were the Sydenham forwards, Mike Smith
and Kelly Hatch, while Russell Tuuta led the Kaiapoi pack effectively. Scorers.—
Sydenham 12 (K. F. Hatch, M. J. Smith tries; K. Williams two goals) beat Kaiapoi 10 (R. Mann, S. R Dixon tries; Dixon goal). Half-time, Kaiapoi, 4-0. Referee, Mr R. Brott. Marist-Western 14 (H. W.
