Cashmere-Hillmorton team takes relay
A team of men and women from the Cashmere-Hillmor-ton club won the annual Metropolitan Life Port Hills running relay on Saturday.
The team started from 25 minutes behind the front marker and took the lead in the third lap, to finish just over two minutes of secondplaced Zoe, with Christchurch No. 1 another 50 seconds back.
The relay was run in cold, wet weather, which accounted for the lack of new records except for a brilliant effort by Denise Fantham (Toe H) on the first lap, from Tennyson Street in Beckenham uphill to the Sign of the Kiwi. She ran the 7km distance in 31 minutes 16 seconds. The old record of 31:22 was set by Colieeh Bardsiey (Sumner) last year in fine weather.
Bascik New Brighton took fastest and second fastest times in the men’s team race, while University were third fastest in the men’s and fastest in the women’s.
Caroline Barrie formerly of New Brighton who was runner-up in the national under 18 girls’ cross country championship, ran her first race for her new club, University, while Rob Mulcahy formerly of United, competed in Brighton colours on Saturday. Both runners took fastest times on their laps. Results. —
