Sydenham house gutted

Fire gutted an unoccupied house in Sydenham last evening. ' When firemen arrived about 11 p.m., the house, in Dewsbury Lane, was well alight Station Officer Wayne Monk said firemen had to be careful because, a cylinder in one of the back rooms of the house was thought to contain

gas. It appeared the seals on the cylinder were broken and escaping gas could have been feeding the fire. An .'expert .'from New Zealand Industrial Gases was called. According to a neighbour, Mr Mervyn Watt, the house was unoccupied and was used by a nearby business to store wood.
