A.I.D.S. carrier in medical isolation

PA Auckland A transvestite with positive A.I.D.S. antibodies is being kept in medical isolation at Mount Eden Prison while he awaits trial on an assault charge. Tai. Tania Toni Te Pania, aged 30, a beneficiary, of Mangere East, will appear this week in the District Court at Auckland, to face charges of assault with intent to injure and threatening to kill.

Te Pania was the centre of an A.I.D.S. scare at the Auckland Central Police Station several weeks ago. He had slashed his wrists while in a police holding cell, exposing many policemen to

the disease. Te Pania was arrested last month after an altercation with a Karangahape Road cafe owner. The prison superintendant, Mr Humphrey Stroud, said that since Te Pania had been remanded in custody 10 days ago, he had been in isolation in the prison hospital.

Medical staff were taking the necessary precautions which included washing Te Pania’s clothes separately and giving him meals on paper plates which could

be burnt. When Te Pania makes his next court appearance he will be kept in a separate cell from other defendants.
