Noble Bijou colt tops S.I. sales

Although there were some bright spots as the quality lots went under the hammer the effects of the economic down trend were reflected in the outcome of the nineteeth annua] South Island Bloodstock Sales held in Christchurch yesterday. In a catalogue which included 202 lots only 134 changed hands for an aggregate $594,500, a figure which fell well short of the sales record turnover of $792,200 established two years ago. Many of an almost full bench of buyers who braved a bleak Christchurch day to attend the sales put their hands in their pockets and kept them there and many vendors had to accept prices which fell well short of the cost of stallion services.

The sales began slowly, only seven of the first 14 lots changing hands, but things livened up and vendor’s hopes were raised when Lot 15, a handsome chestnut colt

by Noble Bijou and Linda entered the ring and was the subject of some spirited bidding.

Mr Keith GudselL a Wanganui veterinarian acting for a Sydney trainer, Les Bridge, eventually silenced all the opposition but had to go to $44,000 to secure the youngster.

Mr Gudsell's purchase, which was offered on behalf of Mr CUff Boyle, of Winton, is out. of a McLean Stakes winner and belongs to the same family as That's Dandy (15 wins), That’s Luck (11 wins) and That’s That (10 wins).

The stock of Noble Bijou, as always, were strongly sought by the more influential buyers and the second highest price in the two-year-old section of the catalogue was $28,000 paid by J. Foote Bloodstock, of Brisbane, for a son of the Mosgiel-based stallion and the Mellay mare. Enchanted Melody. The ven-

dors of this weU-developed youngster were Mr and Mrs W. J. Gunn, of Roxburgh. Brian Anderton, the studmaster at White Robe Lodge Stud where Noble Bijou stands, paid $20,000 each for two fillies from the stud’s draft at yesterday's sales. The first was a daughter of Noble Bijou and the Grey Gull mare, Oreguil, and the other was from the first crop of the stud’s associate sire, Tawfiq, and the Noble Bijou mare, Red Gown.

Top price among the untried stock was $20,000 paid by Mr H. A. Thompson, of New South Wales, for a Noble Bijou—Marie Pierce fiUy offered on behalf of the estate of the late Mr Jack Morris, a former racing editor of the "Otago Daily Times” who died last month.

Pennianne an 11-year-old daughter of RibotUght and the Dogger Bank mare, Caplin, topped the sale in the broodmare section. She was

sold on behalf of the R. H. Austin* Childrens Trust, of Christchurch, and went to the bid of Mr P. Willetts, of Auckland, for $lB,OOO. Royal Sceptre, offered on behalf of Mrs C. Corboy and Mr P. G. South, of Timaru, was bought by the Awapuni horseman, Maurice Campbell, acting for Troy Bloodstock, Palmerston North, for $24,000. This six-year-old gelded son of Noble Bijou and Petite Royal is already the winner of eight races and $35,460 in stakes. Sales details at $2OOO or more were* TWO-YEAR-OLDS Mrs O. M.
