Waimairi rubbish dispute may go to arbitration

The dispute that threatened rubbish collections in Waimairi yesterday may go to arbitration.

The sub-contractor who collects all of the district’s rubbish did not work yesterday because of a longstanding dispute with Mogal Bin Services, Ltd. Waimairi District contracts out its rubbish collection to Mogal, which in turn sub-contracts to Mr Willy Kapea. Mr Kapea alleged the company had broken its

contract with him by refusing to reimburse him for repairs on the compactor supplied by the company. The executive director of the Christchurch Road Transport Association, Mr Evan Williams, said the cost of the repairs "approached six figures.” Mr Williams said that early yesterday evening he had had a letter from the company which said it was now prepared to go to arbitration. Mr Kapea had

been advised, and it was recommended that he go back to work today, said Mr Williams. However, he did not know if Mr Kapea would return to work. Mr Kapea and company representatives could not be reached for comments last evening. The Mogal Bins depot manager, Mr Dick King, had previously said that the company would collect the rubbish until the dispute was settled.
