Chief marathon rival
NZPA-Reuter Edinburgh Rob de Castella, Australia’s world marathon champion, yesterday named the Olympic bronze medallist, Charlie Spedding, of England, as his chief rival for the Commonwealth title in the absence of the talented Africans. De Castella said that the withdrawal of the Africans as part of the mass boycott would be “quite devastating.” “They make for a very exciting race,” he said. De Castella said he was
disappointed that the Tanzanian, Juma Ikangaa, who won the Commonwealth silver medal behind him in Brisbane four years ago, was absent. “Ikangaa contributes so much to a race,” he said. “I respect him as an athlete.” De Castella said he regarded Spedding as his main rival on Saturday. “He ran a very good race in Los Angeles,” de Castella said. “I really consider him to be a dual favourite with myself.”
