Cabinet yet to view pay-back proposals
The Cabinet has yet to consider proposals to make university students repay the cost of their education, but the subject is under study by officials.
The Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, gave this information yesterday under questioning by the Opposition spokesman on education, Miss Ruth Richardson. Mr Marshall said payback proposals arose as
part of the Government’s detailed expenditure review earlier this year, but the Cabinet had not yet considered a paper on the subject.
The Minister has raised the issue publicly in recent months in view of statistics showing that an increasing number of people benefiting from university education come from middle-income and high-income families.
