Petrol used in house fire
PA Wellington Petrol was poured through the “street kid” house in Kensington Street, central Welington, before it was set ablaze, according to the police. Detective Inspector Ted Lines, of the Wellington C. 1.8., said petrol was poured through the house,
particularly in a stairway area, before it was set on fire just before 10 p.m. on Friday. The 14-room house had been locked and boarded up since it was last vacated at the beginning of this year but firemen found the back door open. The Justice Department owned the building and it
had been used since 1984 by the Eru Te Hapu Trust as a half-way house for "street kids,” but was closed about February. The house, which had been vandalised, was being renovated by the department, in preparation for re-opening by the trust as a prisoner rehabilitation centre.
