Court bid by Hughes

NZPA-AAP Perth The Federal Court yesterday began hearing a bid by the former Australian cricket captain, Kim Hughes, to return to club cricket in Perth. Hughes, aged 32, has brought an action against the Western Australian Cricket Association, its Cricket Council and constituent clubs. He is seeking to overturn a ban on playing for his club, Subiaco-Floreat, imposed after he led the

rebel cricket tour of South Africa last year. Hughes went into the tour aware of a three year ban on playing test cricket and a two-year suspension from the state side, but did not count on being expelled from club cricket as well. His action raises questions on the operation of the Trade Practices Act and the lawfulness of the disqualification at club level. Ten days have been set aside for the case before Mr Justice Toohey.
