NZPA staff correspondent Edinburgh After winning a protest against noise New Zealand’s Ray Vallance posted his best international springboard score at the Royal Commonwealth pool yesterday.
The Waikato diver finished ninth in the event, won by an Australian, Shaun Panayi, who stole gold from the Canadian camp with his final dive. Vallance admitted to "bad nerves” early in the competition. He had almost beaten them when thumping in the roof above the pool “blew his concentration”
and he landed too flat after a backward two-and-a-half somersault.‘ But after winning the appeal he improved his score by 25 pointe and dived consistently to bag 528 pointe. New Zealand’s other competitor, a former bronze medallist, Mark Graham, faded into thirteenth place after being handily placed yesterday. The Aucklander dropped pointe cracking his knuckles on the board during his seventh dive. Two dives later he landed flat after a forward three-and-a-half somersault, ednlng any hopes of a good score. He finished with 478. • •
