Scheme helps employers to employ
The Government-spon-sored Job Opportunities Scheme is designed to increase work opportunities for young people who are having difficulty finding work. It helps employers with the initial cost of employing such people. A wage
subsidy is available at two rates, depending on how long the job seeker has been unemployed. They are.— 1. A $75 per week wage subsidy for up to 26 weeks is paid for job seekers who have been registered as unemployed for 10
The workers engaged under this scheme must weeks or registered as unemployed for 16 out of the last 26 weeks. 2. A $l2O per week wage subsidy for 13 weeks reducing to $75 per week for the next 13 weeks is paid for those job seekers who have been registered as unemployed for 29 weeks or registered as unemployed for 32 weeks out of the last 52 weeks. The subsidy is payable for the initial 26 weeks of employment
be provided with full time employment as specified in the appropriate award or at least 30 hours of employment each week if there is no award. The wage subsidy will not be paid to any employer who directly or indirectly discharges any worker with the aim of employing a subsidised worker. The wage subsidy is not payable for people who have been employed by you within the last 12 months. This can be
waived for people employed under Department of Labour subsidised programmes — ask your local office. The subsidy is payable only for the weeks in which wages have been paid. Wage records are to be available for verification if requled by the Department of Labour staff. The local office of the Department of Inland Revenue will be pleased to answer taxation queries on wage subsidies.
