Young New Zealander’s are the main target for the Youth Hostel Association’s latest publication. “A Guide to Y.H.A. Regional Activities Leaflets” is a booklet which refers to a range of activities leaflets produced by the association. These contain information about what to see, what to do and background details on the areas around 26 of the 41 permanent hostels in the country.
The two Christchurch hostels and the Arthur’s Pass hostel feature in their own leaflets.
“They are designed to give people a pretty thorough run-down on everything they can do in these places without spending much money,” says the association’s youth officer, Ms Ann Currie. “They also cover transport and tours, and contain background information.” Ann 'Currie says the target group for
the leaflets is young New Zealanders, especially those travelling as part of a group. “Overseas visitors are, of course, very welcome to our hostels, but we would like to see more use by young Kiwis,” she says. “We think the reason they are currently under-utilising our hostels is that they simply aren’t aware of what we have to offer.” The leaflets, or copies of the guide, are available free from the national office at the Christchurch Arts Centre. Youth centre The Christchurch Youth Centre’s activities over the next few weeks will be limited as organisers save funds for the August school holiday programme. According to the entertainments’ officer, James Preston, the only activi-
ties in the next two weeks will be the regular Friday night discos. These will start at 8 p.m. and will finish around 11 p.m. During the holidays there will be lots of exciting activities, ranging from fire-eating workshops to live bands. The programme will finish with a Sunday afternoon extravaganza where everyone who has taken part will be able to demonstrate the new skills they have learned. Poetry and artwork have been pouring in for the Christchurch Youth Council’s Vehicle for Aspiring Imaginations publication. Rachel Malloch, who is one of the organisers, says the standard of work has been very high. The council now has plenty of material for the book, which will probably be published before Christmas. Compiled by Margaret Baker and Josie McNee. News line is a fortnightly information column for young people. Contributions are welcome, and should be sent to Margaret Baker, “The Press”, P.O.
