Christchurch Boys’ High School, the title-holder, was denied full points in the preliminary rounds of "The Press” chess competition when it was held to a draw by Shirley in the final A grade contest Shirley won an adjudicated game on the top board to give it the three-all draw. Shirley’s other two wins came from its unbeaten pair, Rene de Visser, on board two, and Paul Baylis, on board four. In a deferred game, Christchurch beat St Bede’s, 5-1, but a feature of the contest was the win on the No. 1 board by Michael Shanahan. He was unbeaten throughout the preliminary rounds and contributed ail four and a half points to the St Bede’s total. The draw for the second round of the final Is: Christ’s College v. Ashburton at Ashburton; Shirley v. Christchurch, at S.B.H.S. The final for all grades, except the girls, will be at Christchurch Boys’ High School on August 13 at 6.30 p.m. A draw between the leading teams in zone one of the ■B grade, Aranui and Mairehau, has kept that section open, while Cashmere’s clash with Shirley C will decide the winner of zone two. The girls’ preliminary competition was remarkably close throughout. Of the 10 matches involving the five teams, seven ended in draws, the newcomer, Burnside, being deadlocked in all four contests.

With Rangl Ruru holding Burnside to a draw in the final contest, St Margaret’s A and Christchurch Girls’ High qualified for the play off, which will be at Girls’ High tomorrow at 4 p.m. St Margaret’s, the champion last year, will start at a disadvantage against the runner-up last winter.
