1917 claims settled
Britain and the Soviet Union have cleared up a financial wrangle dating from the 1917 Russian revolution and seem set for a period of improved relations. The Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr Eduard Shevardnadze, on a three-day visit to London, and the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Geoffrey Howe, have signed an agreement, under which both States waived claims arising out of the revolution. Britain had claimed £9OO million ($2.57 billion) from the Soviet Union after the Bolshevik Government repudiated war debts and seized British property and assets shortly after winning power in November, 1917. The Soviet Union demanded £2 billion ($5.72 billion) from Britain as compensation for damage caused by British troops during the Soviet civil war of 191821.—London.
