TVNZ crew for Games big ‘junket’
PA Wellington The Opposition spokesman on sport, Mr John Banks, has criticised the size of the TVNZ team covering the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh as a “junket of extraordinary proportions.” ' Television New Zealand’s director of programmes and production, Mr Des Monaghan, countered, saying the coverage
was being done in the most cost-effective way possible. Mr Banks said the New Zealand public deserved and applauded good Games coverage. “But it should not be an open ticket and an excuse for a holiday in the sun for BCNZ executives at taxpayers’ expense.” Mr Monaghan said the coverage was a commercial venture, funded by
advertising revenue. Any reduction in the 54member broadcast team would have significantly increased the number of people having to be hired in Scotland. “Mr Banks has called the project an overseas junket, but videotape operators in Edinburgh who are working 14-hour days won’t enjoy the funny side of his remarks,” he said.
