Defence talks

NZPA-Reuter Washington

Senior United States and Australian officials will meet next month to discuss the future defence alliance of the two countries in the wake of the nuclear-ship-visit row with New Zealand.

The State Department said at the week-end that the Secretary of State, Mr Shultz, and the Defence

Secretary, Mr Weinberger, would meet their Australian counterparts, Mr Hayden and Mr Beazley, in San Francisco on August 10 and 11. A spokesman, Mr Bernard Kalb, told reporters the talks would “deal with the future relationship between the two countries pending the restoration of trilateral relations under the A.N.Z.U.S. alliance.”
