Kiwis make dramatic changes

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney

The Kiwis will field their third centres combination in as many tests and blood a new prop for the third rugby league test against Australia in Brisbane tomorrow evening. In a move that will give more punch to the backline, Gary Prohm switches from the back of the scrum to his more traditional berth in the backs, while the selectors have given the blockbusting youngster, Brent Todd, his test spurs by putting him in the front row to partner Kurt Sorensen.

To make way for the changes Owen Wright goes out of the forwards and Mark Elia out of the backs.

To complete a dramatic change in personnel, the first test full-back, Darrell

Williams, comes in on the wing for the suspended Dean Bell, and the tour captain, Ron O’Regan, comes in at the base of the scrum.

The changes have been described by some Australian observers as desperation moves by the Kiwi coach, Graham Lowe, but it could be an inspired choice for the test which carries World Cup points and the chance to avenge two consecutive test losses to the Australians.

The New Zealand team is: Gary Kemble; -Darrell Williams, Gary Prohm, Joe Ropati, Dane O’Hara; Olsen Filipaina; Gary Freeman; Kurt Sorensen, Barry Harvey, Brent Todd; Hugh McGahan, Mark Graham (captain); Ron O’Regan.

Reserves: Shane Cooper, Owen Wright.

The Australian team is unchanged from the first and second tests.
