Smith gets judo award
An international telephone call brought good news last evening for Mike Smith, one of the Christchurch members of the New Zealand judo team competing in the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games. The call from New Zealand came in the middle of the Canterbury "Judoka of the Year” dinner 'and Smith was informed that he was the winner of the Radio Avon trophy for 1986. Also competing in Edin-
burgh, where judo is a demonstration sport, was one of the unsuccessful candidates, John Moody. The other judokas nominated for the award were Graeme Spinks and Brenda Leftly. Smith, aged 24, is a member of the Renshinkan club, Bryndwr. Last December he won a gold medal in his under-86kg weight division in the Oceania Judo Union championships in Auckland and was placed third in the open.
