Samasaan weighted at 55.5kg in Cup

The Riccarton stayer, Samasaan, has been weighted at 55.5 kg for the $1 million Fosters Melbourne Cup in November. “I can’t complain about that weight,” Samasaan’s Riccarton trainer, Garth Jackson, commented last evening.

Samasaan carried the same weight into fourth in Marooned’s Sydney Cup at Easter, but will meet Robert Sangster’s Englishbred stayer 7kg better in the Melbourne Cup. “Marooned got the weight he deserved and Samasaan could be that much better racing left handed at Flemington than he was going the other way in Sydney,” Jackson said.

“My fellow was never quite as confident going right handed in Sydney as he has been at Riccarton and Trentham,” Jackson said.

Samasaan is booked to fly to Melbourne from Auckland on October 21, a fortnight before the Melbourne Cup. He hopes to put his New Zealand and Wellington Cups winner into the famous Flemington race without a lead-up race in Australia, but it will depend on how the chestnut comes through races planned for him in New Zealand early in the spring.

“If I feel he needs another one after we arrive in Melbourne the MacKinnon Stakes on Derby day could be the answer,” Jackson said.

Samasaan, which will be based at Flemington during his final preparation for the Melbourne Cup, carried 50kg and 54kg respectively in his New Zealand and Wellington Cups wins this season.
