Linwood in lead for ‘Press’ Cup
The Linwood senior rugby team has a good chance of marking the club’s centennial year by winning “The Press” Centennial Cup, for the best and fairest team in the grade. Another high mark of 19 on Saturday has taken Linwood to a six-point lead in the competition, whih has four matches to go. For the second successive week, Linwood got the full eight marks for how well it played, and the week before that it had a seven. Hornby, with the possible 12 points for its sportsmanship and a seven for its constructiveness, had the joint top mark of 19 with Linwood. At the other end of the scale was New Brighton with a mark of nine, six being lost when one of its props, Paul Bell, was sent from the field in the final few mlntues for punching Robbie Cooper (Hornby). Bell is the second senior player ordered
from the field this season. University also lost an automatic six points through having two players, Mark Meates and Tavita Sio, sent to the sin bin. Mason Dalzell (Belfast), who was involved in the same fighting incident as Sio, suffered a similar fate, as did Ernie Stevens (Lincoln College) in another match.
