Otago the winner again
PA Invercargill Otago and Southland each played a quality of rugby above the conditions in their National Mutual first division game at Rugby Park, Invercargill, on Saturday.
It was Otago that maintained its recent winning edge over Southland to win 27-12.
Paul Turner, a wing, who landed five penalty goals and two conversions, had a 100 per cent record as did Southland’s only points scorer, the full-back, Brent McKenzie, who landed four penalty
goals. Otago’s forward strength, particularly in mauls and lineouts, provided its winning advantage in the cold, subzero conditions in Invercargill. Hollander and the prop, Trevor McLennan, were the pick of the Otago pack, while' as the game wore on, Dean Kenny’s influence at half back became more pro-
nounced. Otago led 12-3 at half-time and scored in the last minutes to give its scoreline an added boost. Scores:— Otago 27 (Andy Hollander, Lindsay Smith tries, Paul Turner two conversions and five penalty goals.) Southland 12 (Brent McKenzie four penalty goals.) Referee: Mr Mike Fitzgibbon (Canterbury).
