Bankrupt
Sir,—The Labour Government is morally and politically bankrupt, and pretty soon the country will be financially bankrupt as the slump worsens. When that happens, those who will be hurt most will be those in the lower economic stratum, as usual. Will there be a revolution? Never. As soon as the working class shows signs of waking up, we will see the tax on alcohol and tobacco lowered and all sorts of crazy entertainments and diversions provided at cost price to take the poor devils’‘minds off their condition and mollify them. Since they will no longer be tired out by the daily grind (being unemployed), they will have to be kept occupied and docile. My cynical response will be that I shall vote Labour again, in spite of everything, because of the party’s anti-nuclear stance. That is all it has left.—Yours, etc.,
TED HICKS. July 22, 1986.
