Rower bales out
From
KEVIN TUTTY
A Welsh rower, Guy Thomas, made the supreme sacrifice when he lost his oar in the early stages of the eights final at Strathclyde on Saturday.
Thomas, who was in the bow seat, lost his oar about '2oom after the staart. Being a true Welshman, and not-want-ing to burden his teammates and slow their progress, he did the only thing possible. He leapt into the chilly waters to be rescued by one of the race tenders.
The seven remaining crew members battled on bravely to finish an honourable, but very distant, last
Thomas was too distraught to talk to reporters when he was brought back to land, but a spokesman for the Welsh squad said: “He felt he was no further use to the crew so he jumped out.”
One of the reporters present unkindly suggested that Captain diates’ immortal comment, “I am just stepping out. I may be gone for sometime,” could have applied, to.XllQmas.
