Boycott punishment call
NZPA-Reuter Edinburgh Countries boycotting major games at the last minute should be punished, said the president of the International Olympic Committee (1.0. C. Juan Antonio Samaranch, yesterday. Mr Samaranch, in Edinburgh for talks with the Commonwealth Games Federation, was speaking in a radio interview as competition began in the bbycbtVhit Edinburgh
Games. A total of 32 teams pulled out of the Games, 27 of them declaring a boycott in protest at the British Government’s policy on South Africa. Mr Samaranch, who attended the opening ceremony, said: “The most dangerous situation is when a country accepts an invitation to compete and then at the last moment withdraws. “In that case the country must be punished.”
