Party slates airport plans
Government plans to turn Christchurch Airport into a corporation have been condemned by the Canterbury regional council of the Democratic Party as "misappropriation by legislation.” The airport was an outstanding example of local community enterprise, and efficient management had made It self-support-ing, the council said yesterday.
The Government had made only a tiny contribution towards the fixed assets of the airport, but now dictated that these should be sold off and recaptured under debt, the council said.
“This outrageous proposition hits a new peak of commercial madness under the current drive to maximise book profits regardless of social costs. “The city’s response should be to bombard its local members of Parliament with a loud message of ‘hands off.”
