Maori speaking contest
Post-primary pupils throughout Canterbury competed in the regional finals of the Maori-speak-ing contest at Linwood High School yesterday. The winners of each section will compete in the New Zealand postprimary school contest at Rotorua during September. The contest was divided into English-speaking and Maori-speaking sections with a junior and senior division in each. Maori issues, were discussed by each speaker. The results were: Junior English-speaking section.—Jason Faafai, Hillrnorton High School, 1; Raina Webster, Villa Maria College, 2; Dion Smith, Xavier College, 3. Senior English-speaking section: - Amanda Heath, Christchurch Girls’ High School, and Michael Kamo, Aranui High School, (equal) l;Mathew Zylstra, St Bede's College, 2. Junior Maori-speaking section.—Te Huaki Puanaki, Hillmorton High School, 1; Vivienne Stedman, Cashmere High School, 2; Christine Ward, Aranui High School, 3; Senior Maori-speaking section: Martin Simon, Aranui High School, 1; Sean Albert, Aranui High School, 2; Angela Wallace, Avonside Girls’ High School, 3.
