Trees without branches

Not long ago scientists devised apple trees with branches that grew onlattice work like vines. Now they have come up with apple trees without branches.
Scientists at the East Mailing Research Station in Kent, have developed the “columnar” apple tree, on which the fruit and leaves grow straight from the stem.
A result of crossing conventional trees with a variety known as Wijcik, discovered growing naturally in British Columbia, the new tree is expected to be attractive both to amateur gardeners with limited space and to commercial growers because of its adaptability to mechanical harvesting. Examples on display at the Royal Agricultural Show at Kenilworth showed a high yield.
The tree, is said to root easily, to have high disease resistance and .to require minimal pruning.
