Aust remains bearish

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed lower as investor sentiment remained bearish in the wake of the falling dollar and Thursday’s series of negative economic news. BHP recovered to close steady on 820 after reaching a low of 796 c with the 3.5 million shares traded valued at sAust27.4 million. CSR lost 12c to 282 c and Bell Resources gained 20 to 410 c, mainly on the back of take-over speculation. Elders IXL eased 10 to 475 c on a turnover of 3.5 million shares, while Adsteam remained steady on 1080 c. On the industrial board, currency concerns brought retailers, developers and tranport stocks under pressure. Ten cent falls took Woolworths to 275 c and Coles to 470 c for a two-day loss of 26c. Hooker eased 7 to 245 c and TNT fell 5 to 307 c.

In the insurance sector, FAI lost 20 to a weekly low of 660 c, while NZI gained 2 to 180 c in response to Brierley Investments, Ltd, announcing a purchase of 72 million NZI 50c ordinary shares. Currency concerns also dampened demand among banking issues with the ANZ down 7 to 453 c despite heavy institutional buying. Westpac eased 3 to 441 c, while the National Australia went against the trend adding 2 to 508 c. Media stocks were firmer on balance. The Herald and Weekly Times was up 50 to 660 c and Fairfax rose 10 to 540 c, while News Corp, fell 30 to 1970 c. Miners were generally weaker brought down by easing bullion prices and profit takers with Poseidon and Renison down 10 each to 255 c and 620 c respectively and Kidston, trading ex dividend, lost 6 to 610 c.
