Royal wedding
Sir, — What a disappointment. The hope of a liberating example for women was dispelled by the archaic service which Sarah Ferguson chose for her marriage to Prince Andrew. This service once again symbolised the role of woman as man’s property. A man, her father, handed her over to the officiating male priest who, in turn handed her to another man whom she promised to serve and obey. The priest blessed and acknowledged the ring placed by the man on the woman’s finger, whereas the giving of a ring by Sarah to Andrew was accomplished almost furtively and without acknowledgement by the .priest. While Sarah may have a mind of her own, what has been portrayed to millions around the world is an example of uncritical acceptance of male domination of women’s lives. — Yours, etc., J. W.
