Obituary Mr Ronald Young

Mr Ronald Young, a well known Christchurch solicitor and member of many Christchurch organisations, died recently. He was 73. Mr Young had a special interest in education, and was chairman of the Fendalton Open Air School Committee and a member of the board of governors of St Margaret’s College, and of the University of Canterbury Council from 1953 to 1956. He attended Christ’s College between 1925 and 1930 and was later the president of the college’s Old Boys’ Association.

While at the then Canterbury University College studying for a law degree, he was President of the Canterbury and New Zealand University Students’ Associations. When war broke out in 1939, Mr Young joined the Army and was promoted

to the rank of captain while serving in the Middle East On his return to Christchurch he joined the New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd, and was trust manager for the Christchurch branch before joining Messrs Duncan Cotterill and Company in 1952. ’ 5 -■* He was the senior partner for the firm for several years and was still active in the role of a consultant partner at the time of his death.

Mr Young also served as president of the Christchurch Rotary Club and the Christchurch Officers’ Club, and held several company directorships. A keen sportsman, Mr Young enjoyed fencing at university, was an active tennis player for many years, and a keen yachtsman, lawn bowler, and snooker player.
