The Wanganui River gorge as seen by the New Zealand painter, Jonathon White. The painting is one of 42 in an exhibition of paintings and 20 sketches by the artist being held at Ballantyne’s store. Prints of the works have been collated in a book and the originals in the exhibition are for sale by tender. The reserve price on the Wanganui gorge scene is $14,000. A dedicated conservationist, Jonathon White draws his inspiration
from New Zealand’s bush. New Zealand, he believes, presents a unique challenge to the landscape painter. “It is the dilemma of what not to paint in a land so richly endowed with natural attraction and which provides a clarity of light and atmosphere,” he says. The exhibition will end next Wednesday. <
