Unique dancer talks to Bragg
One of the dance world’s most exciting performers and choreographers, Karole Armitage, talks about her work on “The South Bank Show” on One at 8.40 p.m. While living in New York, Armitage was prompted by London’s punk explosion to choreograph some of her own, unique pieces. She has danced with highly respected dance companies, such as Ballanchine’s company in Geneva, and was one of the stars of Merce Cunningham’s company in New York.
Melvyn Bragg’s documentary shows Armitage at work on “Romance,” a piece choreographed for United States television and danced by six dancers, including Armitage herself.
There are also extracts from her recent work, a duet, in which she uses a classical dance vocabulary to express modern concerns and concepts to the abrasive accompaniment of percussion music. She talks about her electric influences, which range from sweet soul music to stiletto heels.
