Stud fair earlier

The Canterbury stud ram and ewe fair has been brought forward to Friday, December 12 this year. The change of date from the usual January fixture has been decided by the sheep and ram fair committee of the Canterbury A. and P. Association in consultation with the auctioneers’ committee of the North Canterbury Stock and Station Agents’ Association.

An effort will be made to upgrade the quality of

the entries with only top grade sheep to be offered and the sale condensed into one day. A number of prominent breeders had expressed the opinion that January was too late for a stud sale. Intending purchasers of top quality stud rams had already been in touch with breeders and much of the demand had consequently been satisfied. It was recognised by

both the auctioneers and the Canterbury A. and P.

Association that because of the depressed state of the industry, this may not be good year to gauge the wisdom 5 of the change in dates, but the poor demand experienced for stud rams at the January sale date in recent years had made it imperative that something be done, said Mr Noel Woods, the association’s secretary. The Canterbury flock ram fair will continue in its corresponding date which for 1987 will be Thursday, February 5.
